SHORT STAGE DESCRIPTION
We cycle from Bolzano in a southerly direction to Laives/Leifers and continue on roads with little traffic to Ora/Auer, where the road leads up in several bends along a steep porphyry wall and finally flows onto a natural terrace. After a short, relaxing stretch of flat land, you turn off at “Brückenwirt” onto the road to Monte San Pietro/Petersberg. The start of the timed section is at the parking lot in front of the bridge. The next 9.5 km and 590 m of climbing to the finish line in Monte San Pietro/Petersberg have to be covered in “race mode”. In Aldein/Aldino the worst is over and you can start the final spurt. After the finish arch, the road leads to the highest point of the day, to Pietralba/Maria Wessenstein, South Tyrol’s most important pilgrimage site with the imposing basilica, in whose shadow the refreshment station awaits the cyclists. Freshly strengthened, you roll over the Reggelberg plateau, on the western edge of the Fiemme Valley Dolomites, to Nova Ponente/Deutschnofen. In Rauth you reach the road to valley of Eggental. Now you can put your feet up, because the 20 km to Cardano/Kardaun is a single flowing descent. From here, the last few kilometers are covered in a relaxed manner until you arrive in Bolzano: There in the trade fair, a well-deserved lunch awaits all cyclists.

From here the first climb of the day begins up to the Passo Sella. Once you have descended to Pian de Schiavaneis, on the road to the second peak of the day, you will take the timed section: the 6.1 km and 422 meters of climbing up to the Passo Pordoi must be covered as quickly as possible. At Pordoi a rich refreshment awaits you and a 360° panorama of the most beautiful and highest peaks of the Dolomites. A fun descent towards Arabba follows, where you can gather your strength to start pedaling on the Passo Campologo, pass number 3 of the Sellaronda. In Corvara, main village of Val Badia, cyclists can stop and enjoy a well-deserved lunch necessary to overcome the last uphill that ends on the Passo Gardena. SHORT STAGE DESCRIPTION
We have reached our third day together. The climb up the Passo Mendola is a great way for local cyclists to get into shape for the long summer mountain tours. With 1,363 metres of climbing, the pass is not very high, but its location on the far edge of the Mendola makes it a first-class vantage point. From here, the view extends to the Bolzano basin, Lake Caldaro and the many mountains in the background. It is therefore no wonder that the “Giro d'Italia” and the “Tour of the Alps” have incorporated this climb into their stages. Shortly after Appiano, the timed section begins, where you can test your fitness over approximately 10 km and 670 m of altitude difference. After a break at the Passo Mendola, you descend to the village of Fondo (Trentino), on the border between South Tyrol and Alta Val di Non: here begins the long but rideable climb to the Passo Palade at 1,518 metres asl. Now begins the pleasant descent towards the Adige Valley: in the shade of the woods we let the bike flow until Lana and to Bolzano carefree crossing the large valley with extensive apple trees. Lunch awaits us at the fair.

As soon as we arrive in the village of Trafoi we are on the starting line of the timed section. Here we begin the 48 U-turns on the South Tyrolean side. It is surely one of the most impressive roads in the world! Not for nothing is it called “the Queen of Alpine roads.” The road was built between 1820 and 1928 as an alternative route between Tyrol and Lombardy region, then Austro-Hungarian territory. At the top we descend toward Bormio and after a few km we turn left to take us over the Umbrail Pass (Giogo di S. Maria), on the border between Italy and Switzerland. On Swiss territory we descend to S.Maria Münstair where we enter the Monastero Valley that takes us back to Italy. As soon as the fortified city walls of Glorenza/Glurns become visible, we are also almost at our destination. We enter the town through the big gate and cross it along the main street. At the end we reach the festival square, where lunch is served in the shade of the fortified city walls. Outside the walls the buses are waiting for the return to Bolzano.

The route offers continuous views of the Adige Valley and you can check the altitude gained every time the road changes direction. Once we reach our destination, the route continues undulating to Meltina/Mölten, always in the shade of the larch forests, passing through meadows with Haflinger horses and large pastures. After passing the locations of Verano/Vöran and Avelengo/Hafling, the rapid descent towards Merano begins, with a difference in altitude of about 1,000 meters.
