The 42nd GIRO DELLE DOLOMITI with a lot of highlights is about to happen
Bolzano, Alto Adige - The orbit of the massive Sella-Stock, the climbing tou r on the majestic Stelvio/Stilfser Pass the haunting time trial of the team along the Vine Route which is the conclusion of an emotional week of cycling: the organizers of the Giro delle Dolomiti had once again some great ideas for the 42nd edition, it will take place from 22 to 28 July 2018.
The target date in July shows us that we return to the roots of the event. As a reminder: during the last year, the Giro lasted until August 5 and therefor it took place nearly two weeks later than usual. The Organaizing Committee Chief Simon Kofler and his team stand for a continuous improvement of the Giro delle Dolomiti. This includes not only the professional execution of the weeklong cycling event but also other sectors like the collaboration with sponsors or the communication in general. The Giro delle Dolomiti plays an important role in the communication of South Tyrol and is an ideal ambassador. This is confirmed for example by our short videos, which are put online after each stage and have thousands of views and downloads within a few hours. It’s a good advertisement for South Tyrol that getsunder the skin – and for those who participate, straight into the legs.
Target date early this year
Never before date and stages of the Giro delle Dolomiti have been fixed so early , already in mid-December. The Giro delle Dolomiti starts on Sunday, July 22, with the first stage on the Giovo/Jaufen pass with a total length of 163 kilometers and a total of 1859 meters’ difference of altitude. The second stage, which is expected to be less ambitious, takes place on Monday, July 23, in Obereggen (78 km/2296 alt) and includes also the passage on the Pampeago/Reiter pass and the Lavazè-pass. The highlight of the week takes place on Tuesday, July 24. The expected 800 participants from more than 30 different nations pass around the Sella Massif. The section is 155 kilometers long with 3275 meters of difference of altitude. Wednesday is therefore just the right day for a day off.
A must for each cyclist: a (timed) ride to the Stelvio/Stilfser Pass
Thursday, July 26, there’s another highlight of the 42nd edition: the ride to the Stelvio/Stifser Pass (67km/1851alt). The highest mountain pass in Italy has already been a destination of the Giro d’Italia for several times and is a must for every cyclist. The Giro delle Dolomiti continues Friday, July 27, with the ride to the Alpe di Siusi/Seiser Alm (81km/1615alt) and finally ends on Saturday, July 28, with the time trial through the apple orchards of Terlano/Terlan, Nalles/Nals and Andriano/Andrian. This year, the time trial, which can be contested alone or in a team of five members, makes part of the overall ranking.
Cycling-forum „InGiro“ on Wednesday
The event „InGiro“ will be organised for the first time this year and takes place on the day off (Wednesday, July 25). This is a one-day forum in the social ambience and it’s all about the bike. Workshops and discussion rounds are planned but there’s also the possibility to introduce and respectively discover new products. The aim of the project is to give a possibility to the city of Bolzano, South Tyrol and the Giro delle Dolomiti to look towards the future and deal with subjects like mobility, urbanism, hea lth, sports marketing and alimentation. The event is even framed by a free lunch.Titleholders of the Giro delle Dolomiti are the two Columbians Gabriel Corredor and Camila Cortes which are competing for the De Rosa Santini team. The couple from South America couldn’t manage without South Tyrolean mountains and a
perfect organisation – like many other participants of the Giro delle Dolomiti. Thea participation of Corredor and Cortes at the stage race this year isn’t yet confirmed. In the last few years many top South Tyrolean cyclists proved they can keep up with international competition. One of them is Thomas Gschnitzer from Vipiteno/Sterzing, Edi Rizzi from Sarentino/Sarntal or Marina Ilmer from Venosta/Vinschgau Valley.
